Cash

20 May – 24 May 2024

Summary: Cash rate expectations over next 12 months move higher; cash rate now expected to average 4.15% in May 2025; 3-month BBSW down 1bp; one change to surveyed ADI cash rates.

Expectations moved this week in a manner which suggested the path of the cash rate over the next twelve months will be higher in comparison with its expected path at the end of the previous week. Contracts at the end of the week implied the cash rate would remain reasonably close to the current rate of 4.32% and average 4.31% through June and July and 4.335% in August. However, November contracts implied 4.325%, February 2025 contracts implied 4.265% while May 2025 contracts implied 4.15%, 17bps less than the current rate.

Since March 2020, the RBA has not enforced its cash rate target by completely draining excess liquidity from the banking system. As a result, the actual cash rate has been several basis points below the target rate. Contract prices reflect expectations of the average actual cash rate in a given month, not the target rate, although the former is obviously related to the latter.

The Westpac-Melbourne Institute’s May reading of their consumer sentiment index came out on Tuesday. The index declined again, maintaining a reading which is significantly lower than the long-term average.

The RBA released the minutes of its May Board meeting that afternoon. They indicated the Board was wary of inflation not coming down to the target band quickly enough but not to the point where they felt the need to act.

The Melbourne Institute’s May survey of consumer Inflation expectations came out on Thursday. Consumers expect an inflation rate of 4.1% over the coming 12 months on average, down from 4.6% in April.

The Judo Bank May flash composite PMI was posted the same day, with decline from April’s final reading of 53.0 to 52.6.  The manufacturing index remained unchanged at 49.6 while the services PMI decreased from 53.6 to 53.1. “The Judo Bank Flash PMI for May remains firmly in expansionary territory, indicative of ongoing business activity and output growth across the Australian economy,” said Judo Bank Chief Economic Advisor.

3-month BBSW is a useful benchmark for cash rates and it finished the week 1bp lower at 4.34%. The RBA’s target for the overnight lending rate between banks is 4.35% but actual overnight interbank loans are being negotiated at 4.32%, 3bps below the target but 7bps above the RBA’s exchange settlement account (ESA) rate for ADI deposits with it.

There was one change made by a deposit-taking institution in our survey of cash account interest rates this week. Rabobank raised the rate paid on its Premium Saver account by 45bps.
