Summary: Cash rate expectations for 2024 move higher; cash rate now expected to average 4.355% in February 2025; 3-month BBSW up 5bps; no changes to surveyed ADI cash rates.
Expectations moved this week in a manner which suggested the path of the cash rate will be higher over the next twelve months in comparison with its expected path at the end of the previous week. Contracts at the end of the week implied the cash rate would remain reasonably close to the current rate of 4.32% and average 4.325% through May and 4.335% in June. However, August contracts implied 4.405%, November contracts implied 4.43% and February 2025 contracts 4.355%, about 4bps more than the current rate.
Since March 2020, the RBA has not enforced its cash rate target by completely draining excess liquidity from the banking system. As a result, the actual cash rate has been several basis points below the target rate. Contract prices reflect expectations of the average actual cash rate in a given month, not the target rate, although the former is obviously related to the latter.
March Consumer Price Indices were released midweek. The index rose by 1.0% over the quarter, above expectations, taking the annual rate from 4.1% to 3.6%. The RBA’s preferred measure of inflation also increased by more than expected, although the annual rate still managed to slow from 4.2% to 4.0%.
March quarter producer price indices were released at the end of the week. The PPI rose by 0.9% over the quarter and by 4.3% on an annual basis, up from 4.1% in the December quarter.
The March quarter’s import/export indices came out at the same time. The import price index fell by 1.8% and the export price index fell by 2.1%. Over the year to March, import prices fell by 0.7% while export prices fell by 8.3%.

3-month BBSW is a useful benchmark for cash rates and it finished the week 5bps higher at 4.41%. The RBA’s target for the overnight lending rate between banks is also 4.35% but actual overnight interbank loans are being negotiated at 4.32%, 3bps below the target but 7bps above the RBA’s exchange settlement account (ESA) rate for ADI deposits with it.
There were no changes made by a deposit-taking institution in our survey of cash account interest rates this week.
