Summary: Cash rate expectations for 2024 lower; cash rate now expected to average 4.245% in November 2024; 3-month BBSW down 3bps; nine rate increases to surveyed ADI cash rates.
Expectations moved this week in a manner which suggested the path of the cash rate will be lower over the next eighteen months in comparison with its expected path at the end of the previous week. Contracts at the end of the week implied the cash rate would remain close to the current rate of 4.32% to average 4.32% through December and then average 4.37% in February. May 2024 contracts implied a cash rate of 4.395%, 8bps above the current cash rate, while November 2024 contracts implied 4.245%, down from 4.385% a week ago.
Since March 2020, the RBA has not enforced its cash rate target by draining liquidity from the banking system. As a result, the actual cash rate has been noticeably below the target rate. As such, contract prices only reflect expectations of the average actual cash rate in a given month and not the implied likelihood of the RBA changing its target.
NAB’s October business report was released on Tuesday and the latest reading of its conditions index increased modestly, while its confidence index deteriorated for a second consecutive month. NAB’s measure of capacity utilisation rate also decreased.
The Westpac-Melbourne Institute’s November reading of their consumer sentiment index was also released. The index declined and remains at a level which is still significantly lower than the long-term average reading.
The September quarter wage price index report was released the next day. Wages grew in line with expectations over the quarter and the annual growth rate accelerated to 4.0%.
October’s Labour Force report was released on Thursday. Total employment increased by more than expected but the jobless rate still ticked up to 3.7%. The participation rate rose back to its all-time high of 67.0%.
The Melbourne Institute’s November reading of inflation expectations came out that same day. Inflation expectations over the coming 12 months came in at 4.9%, up from 4.8% in October but down from 6.0% which was recorded in November 2022.
3-month BBSW is a useful benchmark for cash rates and it finished the week 3bps lower at 4.38%. The RBA’s target for the overnight lending rate between banks is now 4.35% but actual overnight interbank loans are being negotiated at 4.32%, 3bps below the target but 7bps above the RBA’s exchange settlement account (ESA) rate for ADI deposits with it.
There were nine rate increases made by deposit-taking institutions in our survey of cash account interest rates this week. The smallest was a 15bps increase by Commonwealth Bank on its NetBank Saver account while the largest, 35bps, was made by ING to its Savings Accelerator account.
