U.S. stocks closed higher, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) rising 1.0% to 42,863.86, the S&P 500 gaining 0.6% to 5,815.03, and the Nasdaq increasing 0.3% to 18,342.94.
In the S&P 500, the top performers included Uber Technologies Inc, soaring 10.79%, Fastenal Co up 9.90%, and W.W. Grainger Inc, which climbed 5.82%.
On the downside, Tesla Inc dropped 8.78%, A.O. Smith Corp declined 6.25%, and Align Technology Inc fell 3.31%.
LOCAL MARKET
Australian shares are set to open higher following a strong performance on Wall Street, where U.S. stocks hit new highs, fuelled by upbeat bank earnings. ASX futures were up 0.55% (46 points) as of 8:00am on Monday, signalling a positive start for the Australian market.
The S&P 500 and Dow both reached record levels, thanks to robust earnings reports from major U.S. financial institutions. Despite profits falling year-over-year at JPMorgan and Wells Fargo, both banks posted results that exceeded analysts’ expectations, with their shares rising more than 4%.
In commodity markets, Brent crude oil edged up 0.5% to US$79.04 a barrel, while gold rose 1.0% to US$79.04. Meanwhile, the Australian dollar was trading at 67.49 US cents.
