US MARKET

US stocks mostly fell on Wednesday, with tech and semiconductor sectors hit by potential new US trade restrictions on China and negative remarks by former President Trump about Taiwan Semiconductor, leading to declines in shares of ASML and Nvidia. Trump’s comments also caused a 6% drop in Taiwan Semiconductor’s stock. The overall market rally slowed, though the Dow Jones made a slight gain. The Russell 2000 index surged, fueled by expectations of Federal Reserve rate cuts. Key index changes include the S&P 500 down 1.39%, the Dow Jones up 0.59%, and the Nasdaq down 2.77%. Gold prices reached a record high, while oil prices increased and Bitcoin slightly declined.

LOCAL MARKET

Local shares closed at a record high for the eighth time this year, with all sectors gaining amid global optimism and record gold prices. The S&P/ASX200 index rose 58.6 points or 0.73% to 8,057.9, and the All Ordinaries gained 60.2 points or 0.73% to 8,303.5.

US Federal Reserve governor Adriana Kugler expressed optimism that inflation is nearing the target, which is needed before cutting interest rates. Monthly US retail sales were unchanged in June, indicating economic resilience.

The ASX’s real estate sector led gains, with Dexus up 2.8% and Vicinity Centres up 2.0%. Goldminers rose as gold hit a record $US2,482 an ounce. Northern Star rose 3.4%, Newmont added 1.8%, and West Africa Resources climbed 3.0%. BHP fell 0.9% to $42.70, Fortescue dropped 1.0% to $22.36, and Rio Tinto dipped 0.3% to $116.46. Pilbara grew 0.7% to $3.02.

All Big Four banks hit multi-year highs, with NAB up 1.0%, ANZ up 0.6%, Westpac up 1.1%, and CBA up 0.8%.

Droneshield shares fell 9.4% to $1.83 after a sharp decline the previous day.

The Australian dollar was at 67.33 US cents.

On Thursday, the Australian Bureau of Statistics will release June labour force data.
