The median trading margin of ASX-listed hybrids finished the week lower as the number of securities with lower spreads to BBSW outnumbered securities with higher spreads by a ratio of just over 2:1. By the end of the week, the median trading margin had crept up from 3.45% (adjusted for the additional of NABPI) to 3.32%.
Trading margins of the majority of hybrids varied within a range of -38bps to +9bps. Ignoring short-dated securities, the margins of Bendigo CPS 4 (BENPG, -75bps), ANZ Capital Notes 5 (ANZPH, -55bps) and Westpac Capital Notes 6 (WBCPI, -49bps) and had the largest (absolute) changes over the week.
NAB capital Notes 6 (code: NABPI) began trading on Friday. The notes opened at a discount to their $100 face value, reflecting the 3.15% issue margin.
3-month BBSW finished the week 15bps higher at 1.96%. Add the trading margin from the above chart or from the tables to this figure for an estimate of the gross return per annum in the absence of BBSW rate changes. The gross return may contain imputation credits. BBSW typically is around 15bps (average since 1990) more than the RBA rate.
