The median trading margin of ASX-listed hybrids moved higher for a third consecutive week as the number of securities with higher spreads to BBSW outnumbered securities with lower spreads by a ratio of 3:2. By the end of the week, the median trading margin had crept up from 2.33% to 2.35%, a reading which is still well below the lower bound of its “normal” ten-year trading range and not all that far above the record low reached in early January.
Trading margins of the majority of hybrids varied within a range of -20bps to +21bps. Ignoring short-dated securities, the margin of AMP Capital Notes 2 (AMPPB, +45bps) ) had the largest (absolute) change over the week. Bank of Queensland Capital Notes (BOQPE, -45bps) and Insurance Australia Capital Notes (IAGPD, +39bps also moved materially.
The current 3-month BBSW rate is 8bps above zero. Add the trading margin from the above chart or from the tables to this figure for an estimate of the gross return per annum in the absence of BBSW rate changes. The gross return may contain imputation credits. BBSW typically is around 15bps (average since 1990) more than the RBA rate.
