Australian Cash Funds March 2024

CASH FUNDS PERFORMANCE

The RBA’s overnight cash rate target remained unchanged at 4.35% in March. 3-month BBSW finished the month unchanged at 4.34% while 6-month BBSW added 3bps to 4.50%.  Expectations in the cash futures market moved to reflect a steeper declining path for the cash rate over the next twelve months.  At the end of the month, contracts implied the actual cash rate would decrease from 4.32% at the end of March to average 3.775% in March 2025.

The benchmark Bloomberg AusBond Bank Bill index returned 0.37% over the month and 4.49% over the 12 months to the end of March.

ENHANCED CASH FUNDS PERFORMANCE

The Realm Short Term Income Fund produced a return of 0.70% in March, thus retaining its position from February as the month’s highest-returning enhanced cash funds in the survey. The Perpetual High Grade Treasury Fund was next with return of 0.53% while Legg Mason Western Conservative Income Fund took third place after it produced a return of 0.47%.

The returns of all three funds comfortably outperformed the 0.37% return produced by the Bloomberg AusBond Bank Bill Index in March. However, only the Realm and Perpetual funds exceeded the 0.50% returned by the AusBond FRN Index.

In terms of performance over the twelve months to the end of March, the Realm Short Term Income Fund retained the title as the highest performing fund by producing a return of 7.12% for the period. The Mutual Income Fund retained second place after it returned 6.73% while the Perpetual High Grade Treasury Fund came in third with a return of 6.48%.

The Bloomberg AusBond Bank Bill and FRN indices returned 4.49% and 5.72% respectively over the 12-month period to the end of March. The above-mentioned funds all outperformed the Bank Bill Index and the FRN Index over this period.
