Conditions deteriorated further for global fund managers in June. US Treasury bond yields finished the month higher, as did yields in the UK and in major euro-zone countries. The Aussie dollar was weaker against the USD, euro and sterling but weaker against the yen. Only 4 out of 34 funds in the YieldReport survey finished the month with a positive return.
The median 1 month performance in the YieldReport survey of global bond funds in June was -2.16% (May: -0.27%) while the median return over the 12 months including June came to -10.31% (May: -7.84%). The Barclays Global Aggregate Bond Index, a widely-used index in this sector, returned -1.77% over the month and -10.80% over the rolling year (when hedged into Australian dollars).
In US markets, the 2-year Treasury yield jumped 41bps to 2.96% over the month, the 10-year yield gained 16bps to 3.01% while the 30-year yield finished 13bps higher at 3.18%. BBB corporate spreads widened noticeably.
In other major bond markets, the German 10-year bond yield gained 367bps to 1.43% while the French added 41bps to 1.99%. The 10-year UK gilt yield finished the month 34bps higher at 2.34%.
The best performing global fund for the month in the YieldReport June survey was the Legg Mason Western Asset Macro Opportunities Bond Fund. It produced a return of +2.94% for the month, following a near best-in-class return of 0.51% in May and a fourth-quartile performance of -3.92% in April.
The second-highest return was produced by the T. Rowe Price Dynamic Global Bond Fund. Its return of 1.31% followed a fourth-quartile return of -0.86% in May and a best-in-class return of 1.06% in April.
In terms of fund performance for the twelve months to the end of June, the Legg Mason Western Asset Macro Opportunities Bond Fund took over the title as the highest performing fund from the Bentham Professional Global Income Fund. The Legg Mason fund produced a 12-month return of 8.14%, while the T. Rowe Price Dynamic Global Bond Fund remained in second place after it produced a 12-month return of 3.61%.
