The 10-year Australian Treasury bond yield trended lower in the first week of March before reversing course and rising for the next two weeks. Yields then reversed course again and trended lower over the remainder of the month days. By the end of it, the 3-year ACGB yield had gained 7bps to 2.98%, the 10-year yield had added 4bps to 3.34% while the 20-year yield finished 6bps higher at 3.78%.

As a result, conditions facing fund managers were challenging in the literal sense. The Bloomberg Ausbond FRN Index was the best performer after it returned 0.46% for the month. The Corporate Bond Index produced the second-highest return of 0.45%, while the Semi-Government Index was next with a return of 0.37%. The Composite Index, representing a mix of federal, state and corporate bonds, returned 0.19% while the Treasury Index, representing Commonwealth bonds, returned 0.01%.

All 31 funds in the YieldReport survey produced positive results and the month’s median return was 0.27%.

The Realm Strategic Income Fund (Enduring Units) produced a return of 0.78%, making it the highest returning fund for the month. The Alexander Credit Opportunities Fund’s return of 0.66% was the next-highest while the Henderson Tactical Income Fund was third with a return of 0.56%.

On a 12-month basis, the Realm Strategic Income Fund (Enduring Units) retained its title as the highest performing fund. The Realm fund returned 7.42% while the next highest return again came from the Alexander Credit Opportunities Fund with a return of 6.27%. Realm’s High Income (Wholesale) Fund retained third position with a 12-month return of 4.28%.
