U.S. stocks closed lower, with the Dow Jones falling 0.9% to 41,954.24, the S&P 500 down 1.0% to 5,695.94, and the Nasdaq slipping 1.2% to 17,923.90.
Among the top performers in the S&P 500, Super Micro Computer Inc soared 15.89%, Air Products & Chemicals Inc rose 9.50%, and Generac Holdings Inc gained 8.48%.
On the downside, Everest Group Ltd tumbled 8.49%, Arch Capital Group Ltd dropped 6.19%, and Assurant Inc declined 5.54%.
LOCAL MARKET
Australian shares are expected to open lower, with ASX futures down 0.04% (4 points) as of 8:00am on Tuesday. This follows a decline in US stocks ahead of key corporate earnings, where the Nasdaq dropped 1.2%, the Dow fell 0.9%, and the S&P 500 lost 1%, reversing gains from Friday’s strong jobs report.
In the commodity markets, Brent crude surged 3.8% to US$81.03 per barrel, while gold held steady at US$2,642.74. The Australian dollar weakened to 67.56 US cents, down from 67.91.
