24 February – 28 February 2025

Summary: Cash rate expectations for 2023, 2024 flatter; cash rate now expected to average 4.315% in August 2024; 3-month BBSW down 1bp; one change to surveyed ADI cash rates.

Expectations moved this week in a manner which suggested the path of the cash rate will be flatter through 2023 and 2024 in comparison with its expected path at the end of the previous week. Contracts at the end of the week implied the cash rate would rise from the current rate of 4.07% to average 4.17% in August, move up to an average of 4.225% in September and then average 4.275% in October. February 2024 contracts implied a cash rate of 4.39%, 28bps above the current cash rate, while August 2024 contracts implied 4.315%, down from 4.675% a week ago.

There were a bunch of reports out on Monday.

The Westpac-Melbourne Institute’s July reading of their consumer sentiment index came out Tuesday morning. The index rose by a modest amount but, according to Westpac’s chief economist, it has “barely budged” since the beginning of the second half 2002.

NAB’s June business report was released at about the same time and the latest reading of its conditions index remained unchanged while its confidence index rose a few points. NAB’s measure of capacity utilisation rate eased again, this time back to 83.5%.

The Melbourne Institute’s July reading of inflation expectations was released two days later. Inflation expectations over the coming 12 months came in at 5.2%, unchanged from June’s figure but down from the 6.30% which was recorded in July 2022.

3-month BBSW is a useful benchmark for cash rates and it finished the week 1bp lower at 4.29%. The RBA’s target for the overnight lending rate between banks is 4.10% but actual overnight interbank loans are being negotiated at 4.07%, 3bps below the target but 7bps above the RBA’s exchange settlement account (ESA) rate for ADI deposits with it.

There was one change made by deposit-taking institutions in our survey of cash account interest rates this week. Rabobank Australia raised the rate on its Premium Saver account by 5bps.
